Indiscriminate firing has become a hot button topic once more after this past holiday season when a video of men firing guns went viral. The Philippine National Police (PNP) said it was looking to determine the origin of the video.
"Presently, 'yun ang ginagawa natin: ini-examine natin kung ito nga’y galing sa abroad or local. Kung local man ito, saan [nangyari]. So ini-examine at ini-evaluate pa ito ng ating anti-cybercime group," Mayor said.
Latest data from the PNP show 41 stray bullet-related injuries with no fatalities. It has also recorded 54 stray bullet incidents.
A measure to address the penalties for indiscriminate firing has been filed in the House of Representatives last February.
House Bill 5387, filed by retired PNP-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) director and ACT-CIS party-list Rep. Samuel Pagdilao, seeks to reclassify indiscriminate gun firing into Illegal Discharge of Firearms, a violation of Article 254 of the Revised Penal Code. The act is punishable by imprisonment from six years and one day to 12 years.
Currently, Illegal Discharge of Firearms only covers the firing of a weapon against another person without the intent to kill.
